The Living Loom

Our Story

Crafted. Kept. Passed on.

The Living Loom began with a simple idea: to bring the beauty of Indian craftsmanship into British homes.

Where the pieces come from

Our journey starts in Rajasthan, travelling through Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaipur, working directly with skilled artisans who hand block print, bind and stitch every piece. We choose the designs ourselves, in person, and bring back only what we would happily keep.

We do not make these pieces. They are made by craftspeople who have spent years learning the work, and we think that is worth saying plainly. What we do is find them, choose them, and carry them to a new set of hands.

A hand block printed
notebook in amber, rust and cream diamonds, closed with a coconut button and
        held in one hand.
Amber Diamond, printed by hand. Follow a single row of diamonds across the cover and you can see where the block was lifted and set down again. That drift is the printer's arm, not a fault.

Why no two are the same

Block printing is slow work. A carved teak block is inked, aligned by eye and pressed into the cloth, then lifted and moved along by a hand's width. Across a whole cover the pattern drifts a little, the ink pools in places and thins in others. That is the signature of the method, and it is why every piece is genuinely one of a kind.

The papers are sustainable art paper, made from recycled cotton rag rather than pulped wood: soft, slightly textured, and a pleasure to write on.

Where to buy

Buying happens on Etsy, which handles checkout, postage and buyer protection. The notebooks and journals are listed there now; the keychains, placemats and totes are still to come. Stock is small by nature, so what you see is usually what there is.

You can also follow along on Pinterest, where we pin the designs as they arrive, or email us at livingloom.uk@gmail.com.
